Mystic Seaport Museum and Discovering Amistad are collaborating for the fifth year to bring a Juneteenth recognition event to the grounds of the Museum on June 19.
The Amistad will be on display at the Museum. This special program is designed to honor African American culture, to increase awareness and to highlight the roles that we all can play to dismantle racism.
Opening Ceremony – West African Drum Call and Musical Selection
The Djembe drum call will open the event, capturing an authentic cultural reflection of the significance of Juneteenth. Welcoming remarks will be made by representatives of Mystic Seaport Museum and Discovering Amistad, followed by a special guest performance of music selections.
Panel Discussion – OUR HISTORY
An intercultural panel discussion will be facilitated to foster awareness of the concepts of freedom through the voice and storytelling of descendants. The panel will also illuminate how the thread of the past is woven into the fabric of the present. Panel will be moderated by Dr. Akeia Barros Gomes,Vice President Mystic Seaport Museum
Amistad Tours and the Exhibit – Entwined: Freedom, Sovereignty, and the Sea
After the ceremony, attendees will have an opportunity to tour The Amistad schooner, Connecticut’s flagship. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to view the museum’s new exhibit – Entwined: Freedom, Sovereignty, and the Sea. The exhibit explores the enduring legacies, strength, and resilience of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and African-descended peoples of the Dawnland.
Additional activities will include a food truck and arts programming.
