Amistad staff will visit students in the Black and Latinx history course at Newtown High School and teach them about the important history of the Amistad Rebellion of 1839.

Learn about and celebrate Captain Pinkney's trailblazing accomplishments in advancing Maritime Cultural Heritage. As the first captain of Freedom Schooner Amistad, he "charted the course" for the ship's purpose as a floating classroom to advance racial and social justice.

Come by and learn from our Discovering Amistad's education team about how the ship was built, the story of the Amistad Rebellion, and how we use the vessel today. The vessel will dock at the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s riverfront marina, where it will be open for public tours, from August 3 through 7, 2024.

Mystic Seaport Museum and Discovering Amistad are collaborating for the fifth year to bring a Juneteenth recognition event to the grounds of the Museum on June 19.
The Amistad will be on display at the Museum. This special program is designed to honor African American culture, to increase awareness and to highlight the roles that we all can play to dismantle racism.

ZOOM Webinar
Discovering Amistad's Director of Education, Chris Menapace, will be presenting an informational webinar diving into the important history of slavery and the slave trade in Connecticut. The webinar will explore the long history and important role that Connecticut played in the institution of slavery, and how the strong resistance by enslaved people in the Nutmeg state mirrored the resistance of the Mende Africans who fought for their Freedom aboard the Amistad schooner and in Connecticut and federal courts.

In honor of Black History Month, Discovering Amistad in collaboration with Connecticut’s Old State House and Connecticut Freedom Trail presents an invigorating moderated roundtable discussion.
The event will be moderated by Tammy Denease, Outreach Director for the Connecticut Freedom Trail. Three phenomenal Scholars will share fascinating history and their remarkable work to reclaim and highlight Black Narratives from Black Descendants.
