Slavery and the Slave Trade in Connecticut

Friday, March 22, 2024
12 to 1:00 p.m.
ZOOM Webinar

Discovering Amistad's Director of Education, Chris Menapace, will be presenting an informational webinar diving into the important history of slavery and the slave trade in Connecticut. The webinar will explore the long history and important role that Connecticut played in the institution of slavery, and how the strong resistance by enslaved people in the Nutmeg state mirrored the resistance of the Mende Africans who fought for their Freedom aboard the Amistad schooner and in Connecticut and federal courts. This program hopes to bring to light an often-ignored history that has powerful stories of oppression, resistance, and freedom from important figures in our state's history.

Once registered, attendees will have access to a Zoom Link

As Discovering Amistad’s Director of Education, Chris Menapace develops and implements several types of virtual and in-person programming for both children and adults. He has always been interested in history that has a connection to social justice, and the Amistad story’s themes of dehumanization and resistance are as relevant today as they were in the nineteenth century. He loves helping students to comprehend how the history they are learning has directly impacted their world and what they hear in the news, and to understand the importance of being involved in their communities in pursuit of a better future.
