Colleen Mason Promoted to Mate on The Amistad
Colleen Mason, who was hired as a deckhand this past Spring, has been promoted to the full-time position of Mate on the Amistad. In her new role, Colleen will supervise the work of both the professional and volunteer deckhands who perform daily maintenance of the vessel when in port. When the ship is underway, Colleen will work closely with the captain to deploy and direct the work of the crew.
Before joining the staff of Discovering Amistad, Ms. Mason had many years of experience aboard classic brigantines and schooners. She has worked as a deckhand, mate or educator on Brilliant, Argia, Exy Johnson, the Corwith Creamer and the Mystic Whaler. Prior to her sailing career, Colleen worked for Survival Systems USA as a helicopter underwater escape training instructor. She is a graduate of Sacred Heart University, where she earned both a BA and a master’s degree.
