Job Title: Educator

 Job Summary

Working closely with the senior educator, our educator plays a key role in assisting in the implementation of the overall education philosophy and mission of Discovering Amistad. This includes participating in curriculum writing with the senior educator, teaching lessons in classrooms and teaching aboard the recreated schooner the Amistad.  Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Participates with senior educator in school recruitment for school year education programs, as needed.

  • Assists with preparation for school visits (includes making copies and other duties as assigned).

  • Teaches lessons in classrooms and on-board the ship.

  • Collaborates with the senior educator on curriculum development.

  • Assists in the development of lesson materials (PowerPoints, worksheets, etc.).

  • Works with senior educator to administer pre- and post-lesson class surveys.

  • Adheres to all safety guidelines onboard the ship and assists crew in the management of students.

  • Take photos for posting on social media.

  • Assists senior educator in other duties as needed.


Qualifications and Skills

  • B.A in Related Field (History, Social Sciences, Public History, Education, etc.)

  • Knowledge of Amistad and Amistad history preferred.

  • Current, valid state teaching certification or related experience.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to interact with students, teachers, administrators and community members from diverse backgrounds.

  • Working knowledge of Google Suite.

  • Knowledge of Connecticut State Social Studies Frameworks preferred.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment aboard an active sailing ship.

  • Team-player and ability to work well with others.
